What is California Proposition 65?
California Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a law that requires businesses to provide warnings if their products may expose consumers to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Why is this warning provided?
Some products may contain or expose users to trace amounts of lead. Lead is a chemical that is listed under Proposition 65 because it is known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Even very low levels of exposure may require a warning under this law.
Does this mean the product is unsafe?
A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean that a product is unsafe or violates any safety standards. The law has very strict requirements, and in many cases the warning is provided out of an abundance of caution. The presence of a warning simply means that the product could expose you to a listed chemical above a very low threshold set by California regulators.
